Three days of NEON: Day 3
A fabulous find that combines this season’s trends for neon colours and Hawaiian prints has inspired several projects using neon. This is the final installment in the series.
This third and final installment will be tackling the final piece – that faux-wrap skirt.
Mmm… lovely!
As this is the final piece in this mini-series, I wanted to go all out and make a proper dress. There was just about enough material once I had dismantled the skirt. Unfortunately the zip broke while I was removing it; I think it was too short to be of any use anyway. The skirt lining also went in the bin. It was an ugly yellow colour which adversely affected the colour of the final piece. A white lining really makes this neon colour ‘pop’, so I cut up what was left of the white sheet from the previous series of projects to use as an underlining.
I decided on a simple ‘racer’ front/skater dress and quickly drew up a pattern. It was really basic… I just drew the neck and arm holes onto my front and back blocks.
Here’s how it looks made up in the yellow fabric with white underlining (front is the one on the left). I had to make a seam in the yellow material at centre front and centre back because there wasn’t quite enough material.
After that all I had to do was cut the rest of the material into a long rectangle, do the same with an underlining, gather it and stitch it to the bodice…. insert a reclaimed yellow-ish zip…..
Finish my arm and neck holes with my patented quick bias-tape as a facing method….
…and ta-da! Perfect for a summer rooftop barbecue with friends.
This one is my favorite from the series! Great job!
Thanks, Renata!
WHo would have thought that such an ugly (sorry9 skirt could be turned into such a cute dress. This is my favorite of the three. You did a great job and it reminds me a lot of the stuff, Zara currently carries.
I know, it was pretty bad to start off with, but the fabric is to die for! I had to have it! Neon is very ‘now’ but I don’t think the trend can carry on much beyond this summer… thanks for reading :)
That’s really, really lovely. I’m amazed again at your talent.
Thank you Northern Star, I put a lot of work into it and was very happy with the result!
My favourite one of the series – you’ve got some serious design and sewing skills!
Thanks for commenting, glad you liked it!
I LOVE how you have broken the pattern up, it makes the dress look like something sold on Net a Porter!
I was a bit nervous about cutting into it at first; I had to take a deep breath before getting the scissors out! I’m glad I did though because I think I will get a lot of use out of this dress!
So cute and updated!! Wonderful transformation!
Thanks Beth :)
definitely saved the best for last! love the neckline and front armscyes! i very recently learned the facing method you used but only in premade-pattern form. i’ll have to try and draft my own.
thanks for the inspiration!
You’re welcome :)
That bias strip facing saves me so much time – I am going to use it everywhere possible from now on!
Beautiful! and it would look great with the metal belt you used with the other two pieces too!
Yes, that metal belt is going to be used a lot this summer :) Thanks for the comment!
This is beautiful! Great job!
Why thank you Tina!
What brilliance! My daughter put me onto your blog today when I told her I was making a dress out of one of my husband’s old linen shirts. I have to say I’m hooked and looking forward to a lovely browse through your past projects.
How kind, thank you for commenting. I am glad you are enjoying reading about my projects. There are many more in the pipeline so stay tuned! :)
